Responsible, sustainable vineyard and winery practices
(Low Input Viticulture & Enology) is a non profit organization providing education and certification for vineyards using international standards of sustainable viticulture practices in wine grape production. These practices are based on a score system consisting of basic required practices, prohibited practices and numerous ecological options.
Argyle Winery is very proud to be one of the first LIVE Certified Sustainable wineries in Oregon and to support LIVE as very worthy cause. LIVE represents a civic and ecological responsibility very close to our hearts. The benefits of sustainability are clear - the practices are gentle on the earth, and we believe they result in brighter, more flavorful wine that better reflect the characteristics of the land from which they are grown.
LIVE program objectives for a sustainable viticulture:
- To see the vineyard as a whole system
- To create and maintain a high level quality fruit production
- To implement practices that reduce reliance on synthetic chemicals and fertilizers with the goal of protecting the farmer, the environment, and communities at large
- To encourage responsible stewardship of the land, maintain natural fertility and ecosystem stability
- To promote sustainable farming practices that maintain biological diversity in the whole farm
Keeping urban & agricultural watersheds clean for salmon
Founded in 1995 by an Oregon-based river and native fish protection organization, Salmon-Safe has become one of the nation’s leading regional eco-labels. Erosion and runoff from hillside vineyards can bring silt into streams, reducing the ability of native salmon to survive. That’s why Salmon-Safe has partnered with LIVE, VINEA, and Oregon Tilth to work with pioneering wine grape growers to protect Oregon’s important salmon watersheds. Since first certifying vineyards in the Willamette Valley more than a decade ago, Salmon-Safe has certified 110 Oregon vineyards representing a third of Oregon’s wine grape acreage. Look for the Salmon-Safe label on wine and you’ll know that your purchase helps keep rivers clean so that salmon can spawn and thrive.
Argyle is very committed to preserving the environment in any way it can. We make extra efforts to ensure that agricultural processes have little to no impact on the health and habitat of our beloved salmon population. Salmon-Safe.org, a prize fighter for the cause, honored Argyle with a certificate and acknowledgement that Argyle meets or exceeds salmon-safe standards.
Helping Preserve the Environment One Case at a Time
Argyle is very committed to preserving the environment in any way it can. We're certified Salmon Safe, we use bio-diesel in our tractors, etc.
Our supplier for wine shipping boxes and inserts (West Coast Paper Co.
) recently announced the happy news that their "Vintner's Choice" pulp wine trays (used in shipping Argyle wines) have been recognized by the Scientific Certification Systems as meeting their stringent requirements of being at least 97% recycled content.
As an added bonus, these wine shippers are 100% made in Oregon... pulped in Corvallis using recycled newspaper from Eugene's Register-Guard newspaper.
